Building a Play Kitchen Using Repurposed Materials

Ever fancied yourself as a builder? No? That’s okay because building a play kitchen is relatively simple. It’s also low cost too, especially as it involves repurposing things you’ve got lying around the home, in the garage or out in the garden.

We’ve put together some simple suggestions on ways to build a play kitchen, along with different materials ideas and games your kids can play once it’s built.

Ideas On Creating a Play Kitchen with Repurposed Materials

A quick search of Google will bring up plenty of ideas on how to build a play kitchen and different materials to use. Some are suitable for playing inside, while others are sturdy enough to handle more than a few mud pies. We thought we’d share a couple of ideas with you, because we don’t think you can have enough kitchens. We’re also super keen to reduce the amount of resources used in making them too, so all of our ideas can be built using repurposed materials.

  • Pallet kitchen – hunt out those old pallets under the firewood stack or drive over to the local commercial area or supermarket to get a couple of used pallets. Often these are damaged, but that is fine. You can either get super creative and design the kitchen yourself, or head over to the DIY instructions on the Bunnings website.
  • Old cupboard or piece of furniture kitchen – got an old TV cabinet, kitchen cupboard or bedside table? Give it a new life by repainting it, cutting a circle out of the top to sit a bowl in and attaching an old tap. If the drawers aren’t suitable, remove them and attach a piece of fabric over the front to create a curtain.
  • Cardboard box kitchen – one of the easiest to make, pull out those large cardboard boxes and give them a lick of paint. If you are feeling fancy, arrange them in a kitchen shape and attach with tape. Create cupboard doors and a hole for a sink in the carboard. Draw on handles and a hob top. Or you could hot glue bottle tops or other odd pieces to be used as handles or knobs.

Once the play kitchen is built, it’s time to accessorise! Old pots and pans, plastic containers, bowls, spoons and even an eggbeater are great choices. When it comes to pretend food, we suggest using our wooden food which can be sliced and put back together. There’s no mess and it lasts and lasts and lasts! Our Wooden Cut and Peel Picnic Food Crate contains all the ingredients to make super yummy sandwiches, with the Wooden Cut and Peel Food Crate offering more traditional ingredients for cooking with in pots, pans and the oven.
