7 Fun Musical Activities for Toddlers
Singing, dancing and playing instruments – all of these musical activities (and more) are not only enjoyable for toddlers, but also beneficial. We take a look at how musical activities can benefit our toddlers, plus share seven fun ideas for you to try at home.
Benefits of Musical Activities for Toddlers
Music provides a rich sensory environment in which toddlers thrive. Being immersed in an environment where music is valued and explored helps our children to:
- Develop a sense of rhythm
- Encourage movement to improve motor skills, coordination and balance
- Foster creativity which stimulates their brain
- Grows social and cooperative skills
While there is no recommended ‘pathway’ when it comes to introducing music to young children, many parents start simply by singing to their babies. From there it grows into gentle dancing, swaying and clapping, followed by lots of noise and experimentation. We thought it would be fun to share more about this.
7 Musical Activities Toddlers Will Love
To get the party started, we’ve put together a list of seven musical activities that your toddler is certain to enjoy participating in:
- Follow the leader – grab out those drums and We’re all going on musical journey playing follow the leader.
- Playing musical instruments – there’s nothing better than getting hands on and trying out all the instruments. Pop a selection out and take your child’s lead in trying out how they work.
- Story sound effects – as you read a story aloud to your toddler, add in some musical sound effects using body percussion, your voice or with instruments.
- Musical paintings – pop on some background music and start painting the box or paper in a way the music tells you to.
- Freeze – get your listening skills and balancing skills activated by moving around to some music, and then freezing still when the music stops. In other words, musical statues.
- Water sounds – under adult supervision, fill jars with varying levels of water and experiment with the different pitch sounds they make when gently tapped.
- Sound scavenger hunt – explore both inside and outside your home looking for things which can make sounds. Think crinkling leaves, tapping sticks, and upside-down pots for example.
