How to Introduce a New Partner to Your Kids

Are you ready to introduce a new partner to your kids? With this introduction being the beginning of your new blended family, you want to make sure that everything goes as well as possible. We’ll look at some of the ‘rules’ regarding the introduction of a new partner, plus suggestions on managing your new family dynamics.

Needing Advice on the Best Ways to Introduce Your New Partner?

Change is a part of life and there’s no greater change to a family than the introduction of a new partner.  Parents often agonise over when’s the right time to bring their new partner home, and how their kids will react when they do. We looked into the experiences of parents all over the world (thanks internet) and found there were some common ‘rules’ that parents were suggested to follow. They include:

  • Trust your gut instinct – are they really the ‘one’ or someone who will move on soon? Wait until you are 100% certain you are in a long-term relationship.
  • Manage your timing well – time is a healer, so after a separation or divorce from your child’s other parent, please consider waiting before the introduction.
  • Take things slowly – make the first meeting somewhere public where everyone can be involved, such as at the beach or playground. Keep the adult sleepovers, kissing and hand holding for later down the track.
  • Explain how you see things happening in the months and years to come – kids love stability, and you already believe that you and your new partner are in for the long haul. Take time to discuss the types of events that may happen, such as getting engaged, the partner moving in and your child having regular visits with their other parent.
  • Let your ex know – it’s good manners to let your ex know what is happening, so when your kids start asking them questions and talking about the new partner, they’ll know what is happening too.

Life is generally not smooth sailing when it comes to blended families, but we’ve got some ideas on managing the new dynamics.

Best Ways of Managing Your New Family Dynamics

Keeping your kids in the know when it comes to changes in their family is key. It ensures everyone knows where they stand, helps mitigate problems and potential issues and creates understanding about the roles each family member has.

This can be a particularly difficult concept for young children to grasp, which is where using friendly and familiar props in a role play are useful. Our set of six Family Generations Finger Puppets is ideal for this role play, and in fact, we recommend using two sets at a time. If you have a supportive ex, you may wish to consider asking them to be involved too.

Using role play, our finger puppets can help you explain what is happening, where people will live, parental visits and even discuss fears and worries individual family members may have. They’re a child-friendly way to discuss new concepts and help kids develop an awareness of their place in the family.

Another great way is to get involved in playing games and doing arts and crafts together as a blended family. Make sure you visit our Blog, as we have plenty of fabulous ideas for you to try out.
