What is a Marae:
A marae is a complex of buildings that belong to a tribe or whanau. The focal point of the marae is the wharenui or meeting house. The wharenui is host to celebration, discussion and mournings.
No shoes are to be worn in the wharenui and there is no eating or drinking allowed within the building.
At the centre of the rooftop there can be a carving of a face or person.
Many of the carvings are representative of the ancestory or whakapapa of the tribe. These are a way to preseve the stories of history.
